In 1769 Captain James Cook had a stroke of genius, naming our region the ‘Bay of Plenty’. He was referring to the region’s abundant resources and generous hospitality, which he observed from onboard the Endeavour, and to this day, it remains absolutely true. The coastal Bay of Plenty is the best place to come for a holiday in New Zealand if you want plenty of choice and a sunny welcome from the locals.
The sunny Bay of Plenty has long been a popular destination for Kiwis and visitors alike. The ‘Bay’ offers a great mix of fun activities, scenic attractions, culture, art and top dining experiences and is one of the country’s premier beach and surf destinations.
The harbourside city of Tauranga is the coastal Bay of Plenty’s main centre with Mount Maunganui and Papamoa, popular seaside suburbs, located only five minutes drive across the harbour bridge.
The landscape of the region is dominated by two key features: the Tauranga Harbour and, standing tall and proud at 232m, the magnificent Mauao (Mount Maunganui).
