Te Anau

Te Anau is located on the eastern shore of Lake Te Anau in Fiordland. Lake Te Anau is the largest lake in the South Island and second only within New Zealand to Lake Taupo. Te Anau is the closest town to Milford Sound and a good base from which to explore Fiordland National Park.  At the Department of Conservation Visitor Centre you can make plans to walk the Milford, Routeburn or Kepler Tracks. Apart from hiking, popular local activities include lake cruising, kayaking and exploring the Te Anau Glowworm caves.
